The Spirit leads us into the wilderness as a form of divine grace. Without the distractions and noise that we are accustomed to, we allow the natural resources of solitude and silence do their work in our hearts. In an environment of scarcity these elements are abundant. Let us embrace the season and face these 40 days with acceptance and trust.
In the wilderness three things happen.
We get:
- Quiet
- Alone
- Hungry
A quiet environment allows us to hear with greater sensitivity. In getting alone our hearts have the space they need to feel the nearness of God’s presence, becoming awake and alert to His presence. Through hunger we are provoked to be filled with the One Thing that can satisfy our cravings.
We pray:
- Listening Ears: In turning off television, news, and other noise, we acknowledge the silence ahead. Spirit of Love, detox us from our need for constant input. As we get quiet, we trust you to train our ears again to the sound of your voice.
- Soft Hearts: In turning away from social media we turn towards solitude. Teach us to be a people of rest. Deliver us from our fear of stillness, so that we might be still in you.
- Hungry Spirit: In setting aside sugar, caffeine, and other forms of abundance we make our bodies a living prayer. In the weakness of our flesh we express our deepest desire; Fill us with the new Wine of your Presence.
You can adopt these 3 Prayer Postures to fit your home, your regional week of prayer, or your daily office. Over the course of 40 days we will take time to dive deep into each posture, exploring creative ways to express the scripture and interact in prayer. Today, let us meditate on the biblical words and feel their impact on our minds, our emotions, and our spirits.
Listening Ears: Isaiah 55:2-3
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.
Soft Hearts: Hebrews 3:12-15
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Hungry Spirit: John 6:48-51 (TPT)
I am the true Bread of Life. Your ancestors ate manna in the desert and died. But standing here before you is the true Bread that comes out of heaven, and when you eat this Bread you will never die. I alone am this living Bread that has come to you from heaven. Eat this Bread and you will live forever. The living Bread I give you is my body, which I will offer as a sacrifice so that all may live.”
