When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. – Ephesians 1:13-14
Last Sunday Graham Catto expounded on the mysteries of our “Guaranteed Eternal Inheritance” as believers. I was struck by the profound truth that we are God’s inheritance. Much emphasis is given these days to our inheritance in Christ. We were given all authority and power when he poured out his Spirit on us, his people. We receive the mind of Christ, the ability to know his heart, hear his voice, and partner with him in intercession in order to build his Kingdom here on earth. What a privilege!
Less often, though, am I reminded that I am God’s inheritance. The Church, the global Bride of Christ that will be spotless, whole, and brought into perfect unity with Jesus. We are HIS inheritance.
I think of an inheritance as something immensely valuable, a treasure that is long anticipated and stored up until the proper time when it can be received and enjoyed. It is something to be accepted in humility and with reverence. Imagine us as that inheritance. The deepest longing of the Father is to receive us fully. He waits for, anticipates, and longs for the day when we will be wholly his.
Today I pray a prayer that’s been on Jesus’ heart for eternity, a longing that causes our spirits to groan with eager expectation.
Father, fill us with your glory and make us one, just as you are one. May you receive your full inheritance.
“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.”
